Summary

Project overview

Developed a state-of-the-art digital experience for UD truck drivers, optimizing their routine checks and tasks through efficient and effective performance feedback and insights to prevent downtime

Role                                     Design Program Lead, Workshop facilitation & Information Architect

Industry                               Automobile

Duration                              8 Weeks

Challenges

Downtime - The trucks need to be maintained at regular intervals and sometimes there is a significant amount of downtime, leading to loss of productivity and increased cost

Maintenance - Regular and efficient maintenance of the trucks is critical to ensure they are in good working condition and ready for use. However, it can be difficult to track the maintenance of multiple trucks across different geograph

Poor data collection - There is limited data available on the truck operations and performance, which makes it difficult to track performance, identify areas for improvement and make informed decisions.

Inconsistent inspection - The lack of uniformity in truck inspections across different geographies can lead to inconsistencies in the results and make it difficult to compare performance.

Objectives and solutions

Automation - Digitize and automate processes like pre trip inspection checkpoints removing lots of unnecessary paperwork for drivers.

Monitoring - Monitor fuel type, usage & distance for efficient trip logistics / planning to predict and enable maintenance, repairs and support

Discoverability - Serve drivers information on fuel stations, fuel type, Ad-Blue & dealership locations before or during one of their trips

Development - Management of performance support across dashboards & touch-points to empower the drivers to improve their performance after each trip

Challenges

User Research

We conducted workshops and breakout sessions with UD trucks SMEs to unlock the existing pain points of truck drivers, driver touch-points and examine viability & feasibility of features that are desired by UD truck drivers.

UD Truck driver proto-persona

We created a few proto-persona’s to focus our attention on the role & tasks of UD truck drivers across Indonesian, Singaporean, South African and Japanese markets. The information was based on the interview sessions with the UD stakeholders/SMEs

Bringing the experience to life through a high-fidelity prototype

We created the end-to-end journey as an interactive iOS prototype. The prototype was to be used for testing by a panel of drivers at UD Trucks, so we wanted to make sure we could get it as close to the real thing as we could, ensuring the best results with the user feedback.

Pre trip -  Whilst walking towards his truck Ahmad launches the UD Trucks app. He is then presented with an option to start a trip. He taps on the start a trip button and then proceeds to scan the license plate number
of the truck. Ahmad carries out a pre-trip check with the guidance of the app on his mobile device. He is presented with multiple screens with a simple way of validating the checks ranging from checking tyre pressure to making sure wheel bolts are screwed on tight. For new users, the media will be displayed by 3D rendering screens.

During-Trip: Serving the driver with contextual information during an active trip

During the trip Ahmad looks up to his phone which is fixed to the dashboard of his truck. There he is able to quickly see how much Ad-Blue and Fuel he has remaining. He gets a notification alert for braking too harshly appear on his display, allowing him to address the braking and improve his score.

Usability testing

In order to test, assess & validate the new driver app we’ve defined a set of user levers to measure the success of prototype

  • Is the new design solution easy and intuitive for truck drivers to use?

  • Does it enable drivers to make smarter choices supporting their decision making?

  • Is the new driver app experience more efficient, saves time, reduces error and supportive?

  • Does the app connect things together and streamline processes?

  • Are drivers able to use live data and dashboards to monitor their performance?

Dark Mode: We tested a dark-mode color scheme to ensure the content is readable and understandable all time (Day & Night), Environment ( Inside & Outside the truck) and weather (sunny, cloudy, foggy etc.)
